Before Bringing Your New Cat Home
Before Bringing Your New Cat Home
The Basics:
- You need to remember to have a “safe room” for your cat set up with all it needs for introducing it to your house.
- Take into account that the goal of the introduction is not to overwhelm either your new cat or existing animals in the household.
Items You Should Have Before Bringing Your New Cat Home:
- A Cat Carrier (to bring your new cat home and for vet visits)
- We recommend solid plastic carriers
- We do not recommend the cardboard carriers (they are not sturdy enough)
- Food and Water Bowls
- We recommend staying away from plastic bowls – most animals don’t like it and plastic harbors bacteria more than metal or ceramic bowls will
- Bedding
- There are lots of great styles of cat beds to chose from
- High Quality Cat Food – Dry and Wet
- We suggest: Purina ONE or a holistic food like Blue Buffalo
- Stay away from color dyes or brands that get recalled often
- Make sure the first ingredient is a main protein like chicken or turkey
- Toys
- Such as: Kong Kickaroo, furry mice, Teasers, treat ball, etc. Stay away from toys with tinsel or too much string.
- Cat Nip
- Litter Box and Scooper
- Covered or Uncovered depends on what you and your cat prefer
- Cat Litter
- Non-scented/dust free
- Non-Clumping for Kittens
- We also recommend wheat-based litter brands such as World Best Cat Litter.
- Cat Treats
- We find most cats like Temptations
- Scratching Post and/or Scratching Pad
- We recommend twine or cardboard as opposed to Carpet
