Rocky ~ Everyone’s Dog

Many of us have fond memories of that special ‘neighborhood dog’ from when we were kids. The one who welcomed everyone like an old friend, invited you to play, happily took pats and treats, and patiently endured great big hugs. Rob and Linda’s beloved Baypath alum, Rocky, effortlessly embodied that role in each and every neighborhood they called home. The couple fondly recounts how, on walks throughout the years, they would often hear strangers in passing vehicles shout ‘Hello Rocky!’ or ‘I love your dog!’

Rocky’s incredible impact on the community came as quite a surprise to Rob and Linda. They never imagined this 2-year-old rescue from Kentucky, their first-ever dog, would become such a canine sensation. However, it didn’t take them long to realize there was something very special about their new arrival.

Rocky, being part husky, a breed known for being very good escape artists, managed to escape the very first morning when left alone. Rob and Linda went into a frantic search around the neighborhood. Upon returning home feeling disheartened, they discovered Rocky patiently waiting for them on their doorstep. They were relieved and astonished that he had managed to find his way back after just one night in his new surroundings.

Not long after Rocky joined the neighborhood, he quickly gained popularity, turning Rob and Linda’s front yard into what felt like a dog park! Rain or shine, visitors would drop by daily to let their dogs play with the always cheerful and friendly Rocky. According to Rob, Rocky captivated everyone he encountered – “He had a magical prance and exuded a special spirit that people were automatically drawn towards.” In fact, he was so well-behaved that he became a role model for all new puppies in the neighborhood, teaching them proper play and good manners.

For more than 15 years, Rocky remained a loyal companion to Rob and Linda, supporting them through both good and challenging times. His positive demeanor never dimmed even when he began to experience common signs of aging including reduced activity, hearing loss and stiffness from arthritis.  When their beloved companion could no longer enjoy in the simple pleasures he once loved, Rob and Linda decided to seek advice from a veterinarian regarding Rocky’s quality of life.

At 17 years and 8 months, they decided to honor Rocky by allowing him to pass peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by their love. Aware that many people cared about and would be looking for Rocky, the couple placed a sign outside their house sharing the news of his passing.

Contemplating the appropriate moment to say goodbye to a beloved furry family member while prioritizing their well-being is incredibly emotionally taxing for pet parents. Realizing this, PetMD developed a quality-of-life scale to aid individuals and families facing this overwhelming decision. While extremely difficult, providing a humane end to suffering is the ultimate act of kindness towards our cherished companions.

Rocky, a one-in-a-million dog, served as inspiration for countless fellow canines and their humans. His legacy will endure through the lives he touched, the dogs he guided, and the joy he brought to Rob and Linda. An exceptional ambassador for Baypath and rescue dogs everywhere, Rocky will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.

💜Rest peacefully, Rocky 💜

Rob and Linda wrote this song as a heartfelt

tribute to their beloved dog, Rocky, who brought them endless joy and love.
