Picture Perfect
Development Coordinator Katy Kesselman checked in with professional shutterbug Kerry Howell, one of Baypath’s incredible volunteer photographers, to learn more about the animal lover behind the lens.
Katy: How did you first become involved with Baypath?
Kerry: My friend rescued a dog from Baypath and said how great the organization is. He suggested volunteering to take dog photos, which I thought was a great idea. I was excited to spend time with the wonderful pups on walks through the Hopkinton woods while capturing their personalities and promoting adoption.
Katy: What is your professional photography background? What do you specialize in?
Kerry: I started my photography career photographing homes for real estate agents and now heavily work with designers to capture their interior design work. Last year I expanded my services to dog photography!
Katy: That’s so exciting! Why are animals important to you personally and professionally?
Kerry: I rescued my first puppy, Papaya, from a shelter last spring and completely fell in love with him and dog photography! This summer I rescued my second dog, Pepper, and I couldn’t be happier to have these two pups running around and filling our home with happiness.

Katy: You were the official volunteer photographer of this year’s Paws & Claws 5K. If you could sum up this amazing event in three words, what would they be?
Kerry: Fun, energy and excitement! It was enjoyable being surrounded by so many dogs and runners among the gorgeous lakeside trails and peak autumn leaves.
Katy: What advice do you have for anyone interested in volunteer photography at Baypath or in having pet portraits taken with you?
Kerry: My best advice during a photo session is “let your dogs be dogs.” I don’t try to make any dog pose for me. Instead, I allow dogs to get comfortable and be themselves. It does not take long for pups to settle down and naturally go where I need them to for a photo – or I will position myself in the right spot. I always make the session stress-free and fun, which is when the best results happen!
