Old Mac’s Road to Recovery… and Beyond
Last February we received a call from a local concerned citizen who found a stray young cat when he wandered into their garage. The little cat was sweet, but understandably scared – and, frankly, was clearly in need of immediate medical care. He was very underweight, had fleas and his eyes appeared to have a serious infection. Our wonderful partners at VCA-Westborough were able to fit him in that day due to his poor condition. Upon exam, they recommended a bilateral enucleation – a removal of both eyes – due to a congenital defect causing him great discomfort and significantly, if not totally, inhibiting his vision. He also had a severe ear infection and needed a feeding plan to get back to a healthy weight.
Knowing he had a tough road ahead of him, we leveraged our great foster network and had one of our newer fosters step up. Bhagat and family took in Old Mac so he could decompress in a safe warm home, as well as get back to good health. Bhagat brought Old Mac back and forth to the shelter to be seen by our consulting shelter vet for a general check up, as well as to tend to a chronic upper respiratory infection he was battling. His foster family also helped him work on some impulse control challenges, such as rough play and grabbing at hands… because, boy, he loved to play! Within a few weeks, he was healthy enough to get the necessary eye surgery at our partners at Second Chance Animal Services.
While removing his eyes was an involved surgery, Olde Mac was already getting along without vision. And now that he was so much healthier and in a loving structured environment in his foster home, the final stretches of his recovery went smoothly. Soon after, he found a wonderful family who was willing to give him the nurturing environment he needed to adjust… and another cat friend in Russ. Olde Mac is now thriving with his new family!
Hello!
Just wanted to share some pictures of Olde Mac. We love him so much and he is getting along with Russ. He’s been such a joy and as he gets more and more comfortable his personality shows even more. Our little Dare Devil.
