Inseparable Partners in Crime
Ten years have passed since pit bull mixes Mush & Blush found their way to Baypath. To this day, those who never personally met the canine pair feel they did indeed know them, thanks to their remarkable reputation. Let’s take a trip down memory lane…
On an unusually hot day in May of 2014, Baypath’s caring team sprang into action after receiving a call about two abandoned dogs. Mush, the male, was swiftly captured, but his female partner Blush remained elusive for over a week. It was only after catching a glimpse of Mush in our care did Blush find the courage to allow herself to be rescued.
The new canine residents were found in poor condition. Blush had recently given birth and both had been left without food or water. As they recuperated, our team began devising a plan to find them a forever home together. Though securing an adopter seeking two large young adult dogs was challenging, Mush and Blush’s incredibly strong bond motivated staff to keep the bonded pair together.
During their two-month stay at Baypath, staff and volunteers ensured Mush & Blush received ample exercise, training, and enrichment. They even launched a full-blown media campaign that would make some of today’s biggest stars envious!
A Home
Previous pit bull adopter David heard Mush and Blush’s story and couldn’t help but fall in love! After deciding to adopt, David renamed the sweet canines Bonnie and Clyde, feeling the names better suited their reputation of being inseparable partners in crime ‘on the lam.’ With leftover fencing provided by Baypath, he created a small area at his home for Bonnie and Clyde to roam freely outside. When he was able, David enclosed his entire backyard to provide his beloved companions more space to run and play.
The Family Expands
A year after adoption, Bonnie and Clyde were joined by Jessica, daughter Jenna and two adult cats, Sadie and Lily. David reports that the key to introducing dogs that may or may not have familiarity with cats is to do so slowly. After patient and gradual introductions, Bonnie & Clyde learned that their new feline siblings were permanent members of the ‘pack.’ Sadie soon became like a third dog, often found adorably curled up sleeping between Bonnie and Clyde.
Although both dogs enjoy walks, Bonnie never conquered her fear of other dogs. She instead chose to relax in her enclosed yard, finding contentment in sharing her affection with lifelong companion Clyde, who reciprocated by acting as her loyal protector. Bonnie did, however, regularly demonstrate her desire to be the center of attention. Whenever Clyde or one of the cats became the household focus, Bonnie would cleverly wriggle herself into the mix to seek affection and reassurance.
A Tough Decision
Recently, David shared the heartbreaking news that after a well-lived life, 14-year-old Bonnie’s health was declining. She was not her cheerful self and showed signs of age-related discomfort. Despite being immensely painful, his family made the difficult decision to prioritize Bonnie’s comfort and peace over their desire to keep her with them.
According to David, Clyde appears to be handling Bonnie’s loss well, especially with Sadie by his side offering support. So happy to give this special couple a home, David says Bonnie and Clyde were not only wonderful companions but also “great ambassadors for the ‘pittie-mix’ community.” Baypath is forever grateful for that memorable July day when David came to adopt two lovable dogs who truly ‘captured’ countless hearts.
Rest In Peace, Bonnie
