Dexter’s Journey: From Forgotten Senior to Resilient Rockstar
A Rough Start, But an Unbreakable Spirit
When Dexter arrived at Baypath, he was, to put it lightly, a bit of a hot mess—but the most endearing kind. At 11 years old and 90 pounds of pure heart, he had seen better days physically, but his spirit? That was unshakable. Abandoned and forgotten by his former owner, Dexter could have faded into the background, but our team wouldn’t let that happen.
A Royal Entrance (on Wheels)
Dexter’s physical condition told a story of perseverance. Arthritis had stiffened his joints, his skin was red and inflamed, and his elbows and hocks were thickly callused from years of wear. Several suspicious masses needed to be checked, and his fur was patchy from chronic irritation. His sore footpads and overall discomfort made walking a challenge.
Cue the Dexter Express—a hand-rolling trolley fit for a king. In true Baypath fashion, our team got creative, wheeling Dexter in and out of the kennels for bathroom breaks. And Dexter? He embraced his makeshift chariot like a champ, seeming to enjoy the relief of an easier ride over the strain of walking on his own.
A Warrior’s Medical Journey
Dexter’s health challenges were real, but he handled them like a champion. His medical history was a bit of a rollercoaster, but with patience and care, he found relief from:
🐾 Lymphocytosis & Borderline Anemia – Regular check-ups and a healthy diet ensured nothing serious was at play
🐾 Chronic Skin Allergies – Treated with care, giving Dexter a fresh new glow.
🐾 UTIs – A few hiccups, but nothing that kept him down for long!
🐾 Hypoalbuminemia & Hyperglobulinemia – Fancy medical terms for protein imbalances that required close monitoring.
🐾 Tick-Borne Disease – Managed with pain medication and antibiotics—because nothing was going to cramp Dexter’s style!
Gaining Strength and Finding His Stride With dedicated medical care, nutritious food, and plenty of TLC, Dexter’s transformation was nothing short of remarkable. His skin healed, his coat improved, and his stiff joints loosened with time. Daily walks, gradually increasing in length, helped him rebuild his strength. Before long, Dexter no longer needed his rolling chariot—he was up and moving, his tail wagging and ears flopping in the wind.

The Road to a Forever Home
(With a Few Celebrity Pit Stops)
Even senior dogs without serious medical issues often face challenges in finding homes, and for a big, strong pup like Dexter, it took a full year. But if Dexter had anything, it was patience, a smiling face, and an ever-wagging tail. He split his days between the shelter, car rides, field trips, and loving foster homes, waiting for his perfect match.
His loyal Baypath fan club, however, wasn’t about to sit back and wait. Determined to get him noticed, they launched spirited social media campaigns—and, hoping his head didn’t get any bigger than it already was, secured Dexter a spot on NBC’s “Clear the Shelter” event.
Dexter stole hearts on NBC’s “The Hub” morning show and later strutted onto a Boston concert stage with Grammy winner Chris Isaak. Yes, you read that right! Dexter soaked up the rockstar lifestyle, charming the backstage crew and proving that age was just a number.

Love at First Sight
After a journey filled with tender loving care, resilience, and a touch of fame, Dexter’s dream finally came true. Adopters Jodi and Jay saw past his age and medical history and recognized the incredible, goofy, resilient soul inside this hunky sweetheart
Today, Dexter is living his best life on acres of land, soaking up soft beds, a warm fireplace, belly rubs, and all the love he could ever want. His new family affectionately calls him their “hippo”—a name he wears with pride. As Jodi and Jay put it, “We fell for him the moment we first saw him on your page.”
A Lesson in Love
Dexter’s journey reminds us that senior dogs have so much love to give. His story is proof that every dog deserves a second chance and that sometimes, the biggest dogs have the biggest hearts. ❤️
