Check the Chip: How a Microchip Reunited Turbo with His Owner
A Happy Tail and a Vital Reminder
This week, shelters across the nation are reminding pet owners to “check the chip.” Our featured Happy Tail story highlights just how crucial it is to not only microchip your pet but also to ensure that the information linked to the chip is accurate and up to date.
Turbo’s Journey Home
Turbo, a two-year-old resilient dog with a story as remarkable as his name, was recently surrendered to our shelter by a family going through hard times. This family had originally rescued Turbo as a stray in South Carolina. As part of our intake procedure, we routinely scan every incoming dog for a microchip—and to our surprise, Turbo had one!
Our dedicated shelter manager, Nikki Baltas, took on the challenge of finding Turbo’s original owner. With some diligent detective work, Nikki tracked down his owner, Leo, who had moved from South Carolina to North Carolina. When Leo received the news, he was overjoyed—his beloved dog, who had been missing for a year after escaping during a move, was alive and well!
Thanks to a transporter returning South after bringing adoptable dogs to Baypath, Turbo was soon on his way back to his rightful home. The reunion between Turbo and Leo was a heartwarming moment, made possible by the simple act of microchipping.

Not All Stories End This Way
While Turbo’s tale ended in a joyful reunion, not all lost pets are as fortunate. This story serves as an important reminder to keep your pets safe and increase the chances of a happy reunion should they ever go missing.
Here’s How You Can Help Protect Your Pet:
- Microchip Your Pet: If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, make an appointment with your veterinarian. The procedure is quick and easy and could one day save you heartache.
- Update Your Pet’s Microchip Information: If your pet is already microchipped, take a moment to check that the registration information is current.
- Annual Chip Check: Ask your veterinarian to scan your pet’s microchip at least once a year. This ensures that the chip is still functioning correctly and can be detected.
By taking these simple steps, you can help ensure your pet’s safety and increase the chances of a happy reunion if they ever get lost. Remember, microchipping is only effective if the information is accurate, so don’t forget to “check the chip!”
