Salsa, a stunning female Calico, and Queso, a devilishly handsome tuxedo cat, are the epitome of affectionate, according to their adopters. What a turnaround for a pair that could barely be handled when they first came to Baypath Humane Society. This is their story and how you make these transformations possible.
The 8-year-old bonded pair arrived at Baypath after being surrendered to our friends Charles River Alleycats, a Boston-based rescue. The senior duo took time to get used to the shelter setting and were upset by much of their new environment. Initially, they stayed in the back of their cages and resisted affection from the staff.
Salsa, it turned out upon being examined by our vet, was suffering from severe dental disease, which we were able to resolve through our veterinary partners at Second Chance Animal Services. Your gifts enabled us to immediately seek treatment for her.
At the same time, our behavior staff evaluated the pair and came up with a plan for handling and play time to help them come out of their shells. After several weeks of this strategy, Salsa and Queso began to warm up to our staff and volunteers, introducing us to their amazing and individual personalities.
For instance, Salsa, we discovered, loved attention and often solicited pets. She also became chatty and talkative, chirping like a bird when staff would enter the room. Queso also found his voice, meowing incessantly for treats. While Salsa’s favorite pastime was snoozing with her brother, Queso was happier cozying up to his favorite people after a good wand-playing session.
Although Salsa and Queso were at the shelter for a while, we used that time to help them adjust and build their confidence. By the time their adopters came along, the pair barely resembled how they were when they first arrived, even trotting willingly into their carriers for their ride home.
Now called Milli and Pico, these wonderful cats are adored by their family:
“They live up to their names. Pico is ever-curious and oh so smart. Ever see a cat try to open a door knob? Or sit on a kitchen stool to be eye level when begging? And Milli is as sweet as they come. They both love to watch the birds. In the morning, they can be found together in a chair in the living room.”
Salsa and Queso’s success is due to you. Your gifts ensure that each cat and dog receives the attention, care, and time he or she needs to thrive. You enable us to create a network of partners that helps achieve this mission. And you help us support families post-adoption.
A gift of $50, $100, or $250 would help us continue this work and make sure that more bonded pairs like Salsa and Queso can find their second chance. Thank you for your consideration.
